A Dream Shared: From Opportunity to Impact

Sebastiana always dreamed of becoming a teacher. Growing up in rural Guatemala, she admired her teachers and hoped that one day she could stand at the front of a classroom and inspire children the way they had inspired her. But for many girls in her community, education beyond the early grades was uncertain.

Everything began to change when she was selected for a scholarship through Pura Vida Ministries, a Colorado-based nonprofit that works to expand educational opportunities for children and youth in Guatemala’s underserved rural communities. Through its partnership with A More Balanced World (AMBW), students like Sebastiana receive not only financial support, but also the guidance, encouragement, and community support needed to continue their education.

At first, even this opportunity seemed fragile. Like many parents in the area at the time, Sebastiana’s father believed that girls should remain at home rather than continue their studies. Yet Sebastiana’s determination never faded. With persistence and support from those around her, she convinced her father to allow her to accept the scholarship—a decision that would change not only her life, but the lives of many others.

Sebastiana continued her studies, eventually entering university and earning a bachelor’s degree in education. Today, she teaches at two schools in the region, sharing her knowledge of science, language, and culture with the next generation. Beyond the classroom, she also serves as a community leader for the Pura Vida program, helping administer scholarships, mentoring younger students, and supporting educational programs in nearby communities.

Her journey has inspired her entire family as well. Several of her siblings have since joined the scholarship program, and the older ones are now professionals with formal careers.

Sebastiana’s story reflects the power of partnership and the ripple effect of opportunity. Through the collaboration of A More Balanced World and Pura Vida Ministries, a single scholarship can grow into something far greater: a teacher, a leader, and a role model helping her community’s children believe that their dreams, too, can come true.
